Nyungwe National Park is an  untouched natural rain forest covers over 1000 square Kilometres, making it one of the world’s most beautiful and pristine mountain rain forests located in the South West corner of Rwanda.

It’s believed to be one of Africa’s oldest forests, with 310 different birds recorded and 120 species of Butterflies .

The Park has recorded 75 different mammals such as the cerval cat, leopard, mongoose, and congo clawless otter just to mention but a few. Its home to habituated chimpanzees and 12 other primates species (including a 400-strong troop of habituated Ruwenzori Black & White Colobus).During chimpanzee trekking one is supposed to carry a pair of binocular,hiking boots,drinking water,snacks,walking stick and rain coat .

The trekking is always advisable during the morning hours and only two groups of visitors are allowed to trek one group  or primates in a day .

There are other activities in this park ,this includes birding,nature walk,hiking,canopy walk camping among others.These activities are suitable for  group,solo traveler and families.

Volcanoes national park lies some 94 Km away from the capital North West Rwanda making it the most accessible gorilla national park in the world . The national park is known as a haven for the rare and endangered mountain gorilla and golden monkeys .It is also home to amphibians, reptiles, and insects.

Bird life around the lake is fantastic including large numbers of pelicans, crowned cranes, malachite kingfishers just to mention but a few.

Besides  being the host of the mountain gorillas Volcanoes National  park  also hosts  golden monkey  ,black fronted duiker Buffalos, bush buck .Elephants are also available in this park though its a bit rare to find them.

Volcanoes national park park was first gazetted in 1925 to protect the gorillas from poachers

It’s a good place to mingle with the local communities and experience different traditions and culture and believes.

Besides gorilla tracking there are other activities in this park,example

  • Tour the lakes and explore the caves,Visiting the tomb of Dian Fossey,visit a cultural village ,Golden monkey visits,Climbing of Karisimbi volcano (– can be done in 2 days),Climbing of Bisoke volcano – one day.

Lake Kivu- Rwanda

Lake Kivu  is Rwanda’s largest lake and the sixth largest in Africa located  between Rwanda and Democrative republic of Congo .It has 3 major  fishing villages , Gisenyi/Rubavu, Kibuye and Cyangugu. Lake Kivu is surrounded by magnificent mountains and has deep emerald green waters. It covers a total surface area of 2,700 km with a height of 1,460 meters above sea level.It is also ranked among the world’s 20 deepest freshwater bodies.

Gishwati Forest hosts a  significant populations of chimpanzee, L’Hoest’s monkey and golden monkey, not to mention 120 bird species.


This town is located on the northern edge of Lake Kivu, making it the perfect place to relax after gorilla trekking experience.Here you can also enjoy water sports and other beach activities.

Kibuye or Karongi

Is probably the prettiest of Lake Kivu’s towns. It’s  tropical spot surrounded by hills covered in pine and eucalyptus only a 100km south of Gisenyi. Among the excursions thats can be enjoyed here includes Boat rides, visit the genocide church and enjoy an amazing sun downer.

The lake can easily be accessed by air and by road .Accommodation varies from budget ,mid range to luxury hotels.
