Volcanoes Primates Safari starts from Kigali  with a tour of the town. The recovery of this country has been incredible and its one of the most rising countries in Africa. Above all, cleanliness is of high standards when it comes to Rwanda.

The park lies some 94 Km away for the capital north west Rwanda. It is home to the eight volcanoes  or Virunga mountain,Golden monkeys besides  the mountain gorillas.

Volcanoes Primates Safari –  Itinerary  at Glance

Day 1: Arrival Kigali – City Tour/Volcanoes National Park

Meet and Greet  followed by a short briefing. Next, embark on a morning sight-seeing tour of Kigali City.

First, visit the Kandt museum, see old Kigali and the craft centers then visit the genocide memorial site. Later, enjoy lunch at one of Kigali’s popular restaurants. However, Hotel Mille Collines – depicted in the film “Hotel Rwanda”; will be ideal. It became famous after 1,268 people took refuge inside the building during the Rwandan Genocide of 1994.

Later, visit Volcanoes National Park after lunch which lies in north-western Rwanda. This national park is known as a haven for the mountain gorilla as well as  the golden monkey.
In addition, it is also home to five of the eight volcanoes of the Virunga Mountains . This includes Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo), which are covered in rain forest and bamboo. Arrive in the late afternoon for check-in at your lodge.

Day 2: Volcanoes National Park – Gorilla Trek/Leisure

Early breakfast at your lodge. Transfer to the park headquarters for registration of your gorilla trek .Your trek starts in the cultivated foothills of the Virunga’s offering stirring views in all directions. Trekking can take between two to six or more hours. This is if the gorillas move before the park rangers locate them the next morning. Upon sighting the gorillas, you will stay with them for a magical one-hour as they go about their daily life example . Coming face to face with a giant silverback must truly be one of the greatest wildlife experiences on earth! . Finally, enjoy your lunch followed by afternoon at leisure or rather  simply relaxing at your lodge.

Dinner and Overnight on Full-Board basis:

Upmarket: Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge; or similar
Mid-Range: Mountain Gorilla View Lodge; or similar

Day 3: Volcanoes National Park – 2nd Gorilla Trek or Golden Monkey Trek/Leisure

Breakfast at your lodge. As soon as you are done, take up the Golden Monkey trekking . This is the only other member of the primates species residing in the volcanoes. Transfer to the park headquarters for registration of your Golden Monkey trek.

Trekking to see the Golden Monkeys is certainly another highlight of Volcanoes National Park.
Golden Monkey is a local sub-species of the widespread Sykes Monkey, also known as the “Blue Monkey”. It is endemic to the high altitude forests of the Volcanoes National Park area. Visitors are permitted to stay for only 1 hour with the Golden Monkeys. Lunch, and  simply relax at your lodge.

Day 4: Volcanoes National Park/Kigali/Depart

Lastly, you will enjoy your last breakfast at your lodge.
Morning or afternoon (depending on your outbound flight schedule), return to Kigali . Driving down the foothills of the volcanoes.
Everything and everywhere, sheer green and hanging on the hills. Rwanda is truly – land of a thousand fertile green hills . That’s how you sum up your Volcanoes primates safari.

 Volcanoes Primates Safari – Important Tips

The Volcanoes area is located at an altitude of over 2,400 meters above sea level.
It is extremely chilly in the early mornings and evenings – warm clothing is therefore necessary.
While trekking, it can rain unexpectedly – it is necessary therefore to have;

  • Water-proof clothing (jacket, with hood + trousers); . Also carry water -proof Zip-Lock bags for Cameras/Film/Passports/Money, e.t.c.;
  • Hand Gloves (warm and water-proof)
  • Hiking boots – with good mud-grip are most appropriate. Gaiters – to protect your trek trouser legs and boots against mud/wetness.
  • Any valuables not necessary during the trek), may be entrusted with your driver-guide.


Volcanoes Primates Safari  applicable cost is;

a) US$750 Per Permit Per Day (Foreign Non-Resident)

NB: Gorilla permits are only confirmed upon payment of a deposit – Non-Refundable.
Then,the balance is payable 60 days before trekking date.
Other Activities:
a) Golden Monkey Trek Permit.
@ US$100.00 Per Permit Per Day (Foreign Non-Resident).

b) Cultural Village Visit:- @ US$25.00 Per Person Per Visit.

Volcanoes Primates Safari – Cost  Includes:
